I am thrilled to announce to Upstash users that we have just released an updated version of our global database (Redis). The new global database allows you to choose the regions. The nice thing is that you can add, remove regions on a running cluster without a downtime. You can think of each region as a replica which has a copy of your data for low latency and high availability.
Designed for the Edge Functions
Edge runtimes, such as Cloudflare Workers and Vercel Edge, provide speed by executing your code at locations closest to your users. However, if your use case requires data storage, it is crucial to also have your data store located near your users for optimal performance. Upstash Global addresses this issue by replicating your data across multiple regions. Additionally, edge runtimes have some limitations, but Upstash offers a HTTP-based Redis® client that is specifically built and tested to work with popular edge runtimes like Vercel, Cloudflare, Fastly, and Deno.
Read Regions Everywhere, Low Latency Anywhere
Global database is designed to minimize the latency for reads. A database has a single primary replica and multiple read replicas. A write command is sent and processed at the primary replica. Then it is replicated to all read replicas. When a client sends a read command, it fetches the response from the nearest read replica (region). Meanwhile, all write requests go to the primary replica for consistency.
Our tests show sub-millisecond latency for clients within the same AWS region as the Redis® instance.
Reads are processed from the nearest replica.
Writes are processed at the primary.
Choose your regions
New global database asks you to choose primary and read regions.
→ Select primary region where the writes happen. So your writes will be faster.
→ Select the read regions to cover the most of your user base.
Here the regions supported currently:
- AWS US-East-1 North Virginia
- AWS US-West-1 North California
- AWS US-West-2 Oregon
- AWS EU-West-1 Ireland
- AWS EU-Central-1 Frankfurt
- AWS AP-SouthEast-1 Singapore
- AWS AP-SouthEast-2 Sydney
- AWS SA-East-1 São Paulo
Pricing
Same with the previous version, the pricing is based on per command executed. 100K commands cost $0.2. Replications are counted as commands. For example, if you have 1 primary 1 read region, 100K writes will cost $0.4 ($0.2 x 2)
Storage costs $0.25 per GB. If you have 1GB data, 4 regions in total then you will pay $1 each month.
The free tier includes 10,000 commands daily, and one read region at max.
What’s next and closing words
New regions: We've launched in 8 AWS regions and plan to expand our coverage through new regions and additional cloud providers. If you have a specific request, reach out to us at support@upstash.com
Region specific primary selection per key: You will be able to select the primary region for a key. For example the key xyz{us-east-1} will have us-east-1 as its primary replica. xyz{here} will have the closest region as its primary replica. This will enable use cases where applications needs to write to closest replica (low write latency).
Benchmarking app: We are working on an application which will run queries interactively in multiple database product and report the latencies. This application will help you to select the fastest product according to your geographical needs.
